No less than 64 people were killed in a security raid against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.
Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 individuals were detained.
Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities said.
The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
